DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ALUMINUM AND STEEL POST SYSTEMS
It is important to understand the difference between an aluminum and frameless post systems as they offer different colour options, designs, materials, applications, and pricing. While frameless post systems can be adapted to interior and exterior residential and commercial applications in various scenarios, aluminum post system has some limitations you should be aware of when selecting your design. Aluminum posts are meant mainly for large uninterrupted lengths of outdoor space. Framed larger hardware is often associated with a commercial look and is often found in settings such as patios and building guards. You may also see it in new residential homes built by developers. Aluminum posts are required to be larger and provide additional framing for glass or picket inserts. Glass inserts are not considered architectural and therefore require framing around each edge of the glass. Frameless systems use thicker 10-12mm (3/8-1/2”) glass which is considered architectural and can hold its own weight, as long as its fastened on either side using small clips. No frame is required for a steel post system. Aesthetic is the main consideration when selecting between the two systems, however you will also find frameless steel systems to provide better longevity with minimal maintenance requirements. For more detail between the system see our comparison chart below.

PREPARING THE AREA
Regardless of which system you have chosen, it is important that the area is prepared properly to accept a stable installation of exterior railings. All our systems have the same requirement for a proper stable base, they are described below:
Concrete
A minimum available thickness 6” of concrete to be available for rod mounting and fastening. Side and surface installation systems requirements are the same. Concrete can be covered with stone or tile, as long as adequate thickness of concrete is available below the surface material. This applies to pool fencing, porches, balconies, and all other areas where railings are to be installed.
Wood
If mounting to a wooden surface it is imperative that below the surface, we are able to fasten to a reinforced wooden structure of a minimum of 6” deep. It is also equally as important that the wooden structure is securely fastened to the rest of the deck/balcony/house etc. to ensure adequate stability of the railings. Special consideration should be given to areas that are prone to high winds, such as lake houses and exposed elevated decks. All our systems are rated and certified to withstand significant forced exerted on the guards by leaning or wind gust forced. It is the homeowner’s or builder’s responsibility to ensure the material supporting the hardware anchors is able to withstand forces transferred to it by the guards. A typical requirement is a triple stacked 2×8 or larger material below the mounting surface which is secured to the rest of the structure.
Stone And Composites
The surface of the installation should be as smooth and level as possible. If not using wood or concrete as the mounting surface, ensure that below the surface adequate material can be found to be used for fastening. There should be either the wood or the concrete material described above.
Handrail Options For Exterior Glass Railings (Optional)
Handrailing is a popular choice for exterior application around decks, stairs, balconies, and more. We use rust proof stainless steel grade 316 which ensures longevity of your investment. Each section is designed and fabricated to your liking. With multiple mounting and profile options, you can customize the options to fit your style.
GLASS SIDE MOUNT
Tubing is installed on steel support brackets which are mounted through pre-drilled holes in your glass guards. This allows for the railing to be positioned a few inches below the height of your glass guards.

CAP-RAIL
Tubing with a groove is installed on top of the glass edge using a rubber gasket. This increases the width of your stairwells and is a great choice for tight spaces. Also a great option for balconies and decks allowing you to lean against the rail instead of the glass edge.

WALL-MOUNT
Tubing installed on steel supposed brackets mounted to brick, stone, concrete, or studs behind drywall. Keeps the glass guards clean with minimal hardware for the all-glass look.

STANDOFFS
If using our frameless stainless steel post systems, a handrail can be post-mounted. This works great on stairs as well as landings, and eliminates the need for hole drilling in glass.

HANDRAIL PROFILES AND FINISHES
Regardless of the system you are using, there are multiple handrail profiles to choose from. Our most popular options are round ø42.4mm and square 40mmx40mm. However other profiles are available on request.

All our stainless steel handrailing come in a natural brushes stainless steel finish. However upon request they can be powder coated to any colour of your choice. A popular option is Matte black.
